restaurant bites

Nov. 1—Santa Fe restaurant and butcher shop Dr. Field Goods was mentioned Oct. 3 in the New York Times in an article headlined Autumn Journeys: 8 things to do in the Southwest this fall. The third item was “savor green chiles.” The Times mentioned a burger contest at the New Mexico State Fair, “a local contest in Santa Fe (won, last month, by Street Food Institute) and a mapped trail of restaurants specializing in the dish,” the Times wrote. “‘The heat of the chile helps cut the fat in the cheeseburger, so they work well together,’ said Josh Gerwin, the chef and owner of Dr. Field Goods in Santa Fe and Albuquerque who recently judged the two competitions. ‘It should be spicy and have bite.'”

Le Pommier Bistro in Eldorado opened for business Sept. 9. It is a French restaurant in the La Tienda at Eldorado retail center.

McDonald’s brings McRib back to restaurants nationwide starting Monday

The moment that McRib lovers across the nation have been waiting for has arrived.

McDonald’s barbecue sandwich returns to participating restaurants nationwide Monday for a limited time. Some locations welcomed the McRib back early.

The fast-food chain calls it “the sauciest moment of the year.” This year the McRib returns days before National Sandwich Day, which is Wednesday.

The McRib – seasoned boneless pork, tangy barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on a hoagie-style bun – first launched regionally in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1981 before its national debut the next year.

Credit its return to its cult status. Followers will drive long distances to get one. Haters, not so much.

Sal’s Bronx Pizza serves fresh, New York-style pizza

Ten years after opening his first New York-style pizzeria in Corpus Christi, Salvatore Colicci has returned with a new restaurant, serving fresh authentic pizzas straight from a stone brick oven.

Sal’s Bronx Pizza was voted Best New Restaurant in this year’s Caller-Times Best of the Best. Though this is the restaurant’s first Best of the Best reward, Colicci has served up authentic pizza and Italian-style dishes in Corpus Christi since 2011.

Located on the Southside, Sal’s Bronx Pizza is open six days a week and offers live jazz music, open mic Wednesdays and comedy shows every weekend.

A Godmother pizza is made at Sal's Bronx Pizza, Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021. This is the restaurant's first time winning in a Caller-Times Best of the Best category.

In 2011, Colicci opened his first pizzeria in Flour Bluff before opening the popular Bella Luna Downtown.

Though the southside location opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, Colicci said business has been good.

“I closed the pizzeria in Flour Bluff because I was kind of burnt out on pizza and I wanted to
