Sal’s Bronx Pizza serves fresh, New York-style pizza
Ten years after opening his first New York-style pizzeria in Corpus Christi, Salvatore Colicci has returned with a new restaurant, serving fresh authentic pizzas straight from a stone brick oven.
Sal’s Bronx Pizza was voted Best New Restaurant in this year’s Caller-Times Best of the Best. Though this is the restaurant’s first Best of the Best reward, Colicci has served up authentic pizza and Italian-style dishes in Corpus Christi since 2011.
Located on the Southside, Sal’s Bronx Pizza is open six days a week and offers live jazz music, open mic Wednesdays and comedy shows every weekend.
In 2011, Colicci opened his first pizzeria in Flour Bluff before opening the popular Bella Luna Downtown.
Though the southside location opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, Colicci said business has been good.
“I closed the pizzeria in Flour Bluff because I was kind of burnt out on pizza and I wanted to try something different,” Colicci said. “One day I just wanted a slice of pizza and I thought, ‘where can I go to get a slice of pizza?’ and there was no place in my mind that would satisfy that sort of New York-style craving that I had.”
Colicci originally thought of starting something small, with pickup or delivery, but now has 21 employees and plenty of indoor seating.
The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and now does delivery in-house, so no need to order through a food delivery app, Colicci said.
“I cook as if I’m cooking for myself,” Colicci said. “I would never give my customers anything I wouldn’t feed my own family, y’know? I take pride in what I do.”
