More than 40 new restaurants opened last year in the Fresno area – and Fresno has a clear favorite.

Last week in our poll we asked readers to vote on what they thought was the best new restaurant that opened in 2021.

The winner? Mayd Modern Mediterranean.

This is the quick-service restaurant that opened early in the year at the northeast corner of Palm and Nees avenues, in the same building as Dutch Bros.

New Year’s Day restaurants open include Chick-fil-A, Waffle House, McDonald’s, Denny’s, Starbucks

If you’re looking for coffee or want to eat out or bring a meal in New Year’s Day, there is a smorgasbord of options Saturday.

Unlike Christmas Day, when many major chains closed with few exceptions, more restaurants will be open to bid 2021 farewell and welcome 2022.

But expect to find many restaurants operating with special hours Saturday. Most Chick-fil-A restaurants close at 6 p.m. Saturday, the chicken chain said in a blog post, noting hours can vary by location.

It’s often a franchise decision whether a restaurant opens on holidays, so check with your closest location before heading out.

Stoney Creek Inn in Dauphin remains open as owner sells restaurant

A well-known restaurant with stunning waterfront views in Dauphin County is for sale.

Diners patronize Stoney Creek Inn in Dauphin for hand-cut steaks, seafood and Greek specialties as well as outdoor seating along the Stoney Creek falls.

Owner Nick Kolivras said he’s selling the restaurant, which he has operated since 2012, to start a new chapter in his life. He said changes in the industry over the past two years, including higher food prices, inventory issues and inability to find qualified workers, have made it too difficult to do business.

“The dynamics of the industry has changed and it’s not something I want to continue to be my lifestyle,” Kolivras said.

In the meantime, Stoney Creek at 150 Erie St. remains open for business as normal. Kolivras stressed business is thriving and the restaurant is busy.

Christmas restaurants open 2021: Starbucks, McDonald’s, IHOP, Dunkin’

If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee on Christmas, be prepared to find limited options Saturday.

Major national restaurant chains like Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s, Taco Bell and Chipotle are closed for the holiday. With Christmas falling on a Saturday, it means Chick-fil-A will be closed two days in a row since its restaurants are traditionally closed Sundays.

But many Starbucks, McDonald’s and Dunkin’ locations will be open on Christmas, along with IHOP, Denny’s and Waffle House.

You also might be able to order pizza from Pizza Hut, Domino’s or Papa John’s, but not all locations will be open or delivering.
