The best restaurants in Newcastle upon Tyne

These are unusual times, and the state of affairs can change quickly. Please check the latest travel guidance before making your journey. Note that our writer visited pre-pandemic.

Newcastle may be renowned as the birthplace of pease pudding, Pan Haggerty, and its eponymous Brown Ale, but there’s a burgeoning food scene – beyond beige foodstuffs – well worth discovering, thanks to a flurry of culinary start-ups breathing new life into the city. Flanked by the North Sea and the unspoilt Northumberland countryside, Newcastle’s chefs have access to one of Britain’s best-stocked natural larders – and it certainly shows. From authentic Andalusian-style tapas to stellar seafood shacks and proudly northern pubs, here’s where to dine if you find yourself spending time on the Tyne…

Central

The French Quarter

Set beneath the old railway arches, this Parisian-inspired bistro and wine bar offers an authentic taste of France, just a stone’s throw from Newcastle Central Station. The sharing-style menu features all the classics – including escargot, confit de canard, and dangerously good dauphinois – alongside cheese and charcuterie platters showcasing the finest French produce. Needless to say, their wine list is admirably extensive, but your best bet is opting for their seasonal wine flight for a soupçon of their current favourites. Can’t get enough? Fear not, there’s an on-site deli where true Francophiles can stock up on their favourite bottles to take home.
