McDonald’s to close 200 U.S. restaurants. Here’s where some of the closures are expected

Jaime E. Love

McDonald’s is permanently closing 200 of its 14,000 U.S. locations this year with “low-volume restaurants” in Walmart stores making up over half of the closures.

During its quarterly earnings call Tuesday, the fast food giant said the closings were previously planned for future years but are being accelerated. Officials also shared the continued impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on sales globally.

“Within a matter of weeks, the McDonald’s system made operational modifications across 30,000 restaurants, while closing and then reopening another 9,000 restaurants,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said during Tuesday’s earnings call. “We introduced new safety procedures in all our restaurants, modified our menus, and developed new contactless ways to serve our customers.”

Others, though, have been serving up superb Slovenian cuisine for years and continue to do so. They have been joined by a sprinkling of newer ventures bringing in a welcome dash of creativity and a refocusing on fresh, local produce, which Slovenia’s Gorenjska region offers up in such impressive abundance. Telegraph Travel expert, Robin McKelvie, is a former winner of the Slovenian Tourist Office’s ‘UK Journalist of the Year’ title. Robin is spending summer 2020 in the country researching an update of his Bradt guide to Slovenia, and here he shares his knowledge of Bled’s growing restaurant scene.

Bed-Stuy Restaurants Won’t Survive Without Rent Help, Owners Say

Jaime E. Love

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Beloved neighborhood restaurants are still at risk of closing for good a month of opening their doors back up to customers for outdoor dining, owners said this week.

A group of Bed-Stuy restaurants who lobbied for Mayor Bill de Blasio to let them set up outdoors as the city reopens from the coronavirus crisis now say revenue from the limited outdoor tables won’t be enough to keep them afloat through the year.

“12 tables on the best day are never going to give us enough revenue to continue,” Samantha DiStefano, owner of Mama Fox, says in a new video. “I don’t see how these numbers are going to work through the winter.”

Mama Fox was one of at least four restaurants included in the new video that said they would have to close their doors for good if something doesn’t change.

This time, the change the restaurants
